“What appeals to me about distortion in portraiture is how it has such a large range of possibilities for an artist to develop their own distinctive style. It can show pure, unfiltered emotion from the use of colour, technique and shape which is seen through many great artists' work. I find art is successful when it makes people stop and look, even if they do not understand or particularly like it. Distortion is memorable through its expression and how it manipulates meaning and emotion; it can create nuance through gaudiness and beauty through ugliness. In my eyes, it is more human than the robotic perfection of realistic work in the modern day, which is partly the reason why I decided to focus on this broad genre in my personal study. I hope my art also reflects this humanity and expression, along with reflecting my identity as well as my skill.”
